News Nearby: Legislation Honoring Fallen Police Officer John David Dryer Introduced

State Rep. Brandon Neuman, D-North Strabane, introduced the bill this week.

 this week introduced two bills honoring the life of East Washington Borough police Officer John David Dryer, 

House Bill 2215 designates the interchange at the intersection of state Route 136 and Interstate 70 in Washington County as the Officer John David Dryer Memorial Interchange, and House Resolution 578 recognizes the sacrifices and accomplishments of Dryer throughout his career as a police officer.

"Officer Dryer's courage, professionalism and service are remembered by our community with gratitude," Neuman, D-, said. "There are no words to make sense of this awful tragedy, but I would like to show my support and appreciation for officer Dryer and for his surviving family members. His life was truly a life a sacrifice and service."

, D-, said, "Officer Dryer was an important part of the Washington community all the way around. His service as a police officer, veterinarian, and upstanding citizen will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family."

Dryer is survived by his son, Benjamin; his parents JoAnn and John; his brother, Donald; and his sister, Elizabeth.

Last December, Dryer observed a vehicle in East Washington Borough and initiated a routine traffic stop on the highway; with another officer arriving to assist him. Unfortunately, a confrontation occurred and the driver shot both Dryer and the other officer. Dryer died as a result of the incident .

"It’s a tragedy that never should have happened. The Washington County community lost a hero," Neuman said. "I believe we should always remember his bravery, as well as the service he provided to the community."

Dryer also served as a police officer for Donegal Township and Midway Borough. 

In addition to his accomplishments in law enforcement, Dryer owned and operated the Chestnut Veterinary Clinic in Washington County, and was previously employed as an equine veterinarian throughout North America.
