Edgewood Police Department Seeks New Applicants

The borough is updating the civil service list for future vacancies.

People interested in a job on the Edgewood police force have until 4 p.m. Aug. 31 to submit an application to the borough's Civil Service Commission.

Police Chief Robert Payne told Edgewood Council on Monday that the department is getting some response to a newspaper ad for a full-time patrolman. Applicants will take a written test at 9 a.m. on Sept. 5 at the Allegheny County Police Academy.

Those who pass the test will also be required to undergo a physical and an oral board examination. After veterans preference points are added, a list of possible hires will be compiled, Payne said.

To be eligible, an applicant must be 21 years old and be willing to move within 15 air miles of Edgewood within six months after the end of the required probationary period. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, and have a four-year post-secondary education or three years experience in a law enforcement agency.

The starting salary for a full-time patrolman would be $45,684 with a salary increase to $65,264 in six full years.

Although there are no openings on the force at present, Payne said maintaining a current list enables the borough to act quickly to replace an officer who leaves the force or gets injured.

An application form and details of the selection process may be obtained at the Edgewood Borough Building, 2 Race St., between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
