Swissvale, Edgewood Hold Fire Prevention Week Events

Swissvale Fire Department will have an open house with activities on Oct. 7 and Edgewood firefighters will hold safety day Oct. 13.

Local fire departments will be observing Fire Prevention Week with activities this weekend and next.

Swissvale

The Swissvale Fire Department will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the new fire station, 7400 Irvine St., to kick off Fire Prevention Week 2012.

Fire prevention activities will be conducted, including a Fire Safety House demonstration and fire extinguisher training, according to fire Chief Clyde Wilhelm. Visitors will also have a chance to tour the new fire station and see the fire department’s new ladder truck. 

Eastern Area PreHospital Services is offering blood pressure screenings.

All borough residents are encouraged to attend. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served along with other refreshments.

Edgewood

Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department will have a safety day from 12 to 3 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Edgewood Towne Centre Kmart, according to fire Chief Dave Andrews.

History

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the 1871 Great Chicago Fire that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on Oct. 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on Oct. 9.
