Swisshelm Park Man Convicted for Narcotics Violations

Griffin Abel, 34, will serve 37 months in prison.

A resident of Swisshelm Park has been sentenced in federal court to 37 months
imprisonment on his conviction for violating federal narcotics laws, U.S Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

Senior U.S. District Judge Maurice B. Cohill imposed the sentence on Griffin Abel, 34, of 1610 Oakgrove Ave.

According to information presented to the court, from the fall of 2009 to Nov. 23, 2010, Abel conspired to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana. Abel arranged for at least five 100-pound shipments of marijuana to be transported in duffel bags from California and Nevada to Pittsburgh, where the drugs were delivered to Abel for distribution.

Abel was arrested in Pittsburgh on Nov. 23, 2010, after a 125-pound shipment of marijuana destined for him in Pittsburgh was intercepted by police in Kansas. Seized at the same time were scales, cash, and a money-counting machine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory J. Nescott prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Drug Enforcement Administration for the
investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Abel.
