GameStop Robbed at Gunpoint, Suspect Arrested

The Edgewood Towne Center store was robbed Wednesday night.

A Wilkinsburg man is in Allegheny County Jail after he robbed the Edgewood Towne Center with a stolen semi-automatic weapon, and was later stopped by Swissvale and Edgewood police while trying to flee the scene.

Marque Yellets, 20, of Wilkinsburg is charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possessing an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering others, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and possession of firearms not to be carried without a license, according to Edgewood Police Chief Robert Payne.

Police received a dispatch from the county at 6 p.m. Wednesday that a man wearing a grey hoodie and carrying a gun went into the GameStop store. Edgewood and Swissvale police arrived and saw the man running from the door with the gun, which was a semi-automatic 40-caliber weapon. No one was injured.

“This was a lot of firepower because he also had an extended magazine, which means it could carry 30 rounds of ammunition,” Payne said.

Swissvale police immediately started chasing Yellets on foot, while Edgewood police blocked his path with the car. Yellets then threw the gun down and surrendered, Payne said.

Payne said Yellets went into the store and demanded money from two workers. There was also one customer at the GameStop and all three were told to sit behind the counter.

“He told them to open the safe, which was on a timer that took 10 minutes to open,” Payne said. “He got nervous and ran out, which is when we found him.”

Payne also said the gun police confiscated had been stolen during a robbery in Cecil Township in Washington County in May.

Wilkinsburg police helped to identify the suspect. Payne said they are now looking into past robberies that have occurred to investigate if Yellets may have been involved in others in the area.
