Car Flips on Side on Greensburg Pike in Forest Hills

Bus with emergency sign, thefts and a barking dogs among the other items this week from the Forest Hills police blotter.

Forest Hills police found a vehicle flipped onto its side when they responded to an accident about 11:33 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the 3700 block of Greensburg Pike.

The driver was stuck inside the car, but was alert and conscious. EMS and fire crews were called to help extricate her from the car.

A witness told police he observed the car driving with no lights on. He said the vehicle seemed to lose control and struck a parked car.

Once extricated, the driver told police she had lost control because of the road conditions. The officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath.

The woman was treated for injuries and transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where she agreed to submit to a blood alcohol content test. The two vehicles were towed from the scene.

Feb. 5

  • A Bevington Road resident reported to police that she either lost her purse at the Wal-Mart in North Versailles Feb. 4 or it was stolen. She had searched the store with no results. No one had turned it in. The purse contained $65-75, a debit card and a driver's license. She cancelled the debit card and she was advised by police to do the same with her driver's license.

Feb. 4

  • A Wilkinsburg resident reported that a Westmoreland Transit bus at the intersection of Ardmore Boulevard and Morrow Drive had a sign showing on the bus that said "Emergency. Call 911." Officers were en route and located the eastbound bus just as they were contacted by Allegheny County 911, which reported the bus company said the sign was being displayed accidentally.
  • A resident of the 400 block of Pacific Avenue called police about 5:10 p.m. to report that a suspicious man was standing underneath the back deck on his house. Two Forest Hills and one Braddock Hills officer arrived at the scene and found a man standing, slumped over, at the rear of the home. The man appeared highly intoxicated and had slurred speech, according to a police report. He told officers he was waiting out the weather until he could walk back to his house, which was in the same block. The man could not walk without assistance and had to be helped to the street. He told the officers he had been mixing prescribed pain medication with vodka. The man was taken into custody and transported to the police station for processing, then turned over to the custody of his wife.
  • Police responded to a complaint by a Berkley Avenue resident about a barking dog out in the cold at 6:06 p.m. The resident's son came home while officers were on the scene and said the dogs were out only a half hour. He took the dogs inside. Police advised him to have his mother call them when she returned home.

Feb. 3

  • While returning from the Allegheny County crime lab about 2:35 a.m., a Forest Hills officer came across a highly intoxicated man walking in the middle of the East Busway at Whole Foods in East Liberty. He stopped his car and approached the man, who could barely speak. The officer had to grab him and hold him up to keep him from falling over. The man was placed in handcuffs without incident. The Port Authority police responded and took custody of the man.
  • An officer heard a loud argument between a man and woman in front of the Aldi's in the Ardmore Shopping Center about 12:15 p.m. While talking to the man, an officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from him. He also had glazed and bloodshot eyes, and the officer determined that the man was intoxicated. After placing him in handcuffs, the woman told police they were arguing over money when she dropped some eggs. She said that he drove a shopping cart over the eggs. The man was taken to the police station and placed in a holding cell. A preliminary breath tests showed his blood alcohol content at twice the legal limit. He was issued citations for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness and released to his girlfriend. 
  • An employee of Domino's Pizza who lives in Forest Hills reported that $100 was stolen from her wallet while she was at work between 5 and 9 p.m. on Feb. 3. She said the purse had been hanging on a hook outside the manager's office, covered by her hoodie. She noticed her purse on the floor and discovered the wallet had been opened and the money gone. She reported the theft to the manager, who talked to the other employees. The money was not recovered by the close of business.

Feb. 2

  • A motorist was unable to make it up Sumner Avenue about 6:33 p.m. because of snow, so he began to back down the hill. The vehicle slid into the corner of the Fazio building, but there was no apparent damage.
