Forest Hills Couple Taken to Hospital after Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Sherwood Road residents are in good condition.

An elderly deaf couple from Forest Hills narrowly avoided tragedy Monday morning after carbon monoxide filled the Sherwood Road home.

Forest Hills Police Chief Chuck Williams said the department received a call around 8 a.m. Monday morning that stated a husband and wife in their 70s had been overcome by carbon monoxide after leaving the car running in the garage.

Williams said the incident appeared to be an accident.

“They were very fortunate that their interior door in the garage was well insulated because it kept it down there,” Williams said. “It continued to build and they were feeling the side effects of that. Luckily they were able to call through a system where they can use sign language and called 911.”

An officer had to help the man out of the home because he had become sick from exposure. Williams said the names were not yet available as family had to be notified.

The couple was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Oakland and are in good condition.

“In this case there was a big problem and they are really lucky and that’s what it comes down to,” Williams said. “I think they are going to be OK.”
