Customers Leave Forest Hills Aldi with a Load of Groceries

Two people pushed a large shopping cart full of groceries out of the Aldi in Forest Hills Shopping Center about 4:23 p.m. on Jan. 16.

The assistant store manager told Forest Hills police that he was alerted to the possible theft by a customer who saw a man and woman push the buggy out through the "in" door as another customer entered the store. The assistant manager immediately exited the store and approached the couple as they were loading the groceries into a vehicle.

He asked if they had a receipt for the items, and both the man and woman turned, got into the red Chevrolet Cavalier and drove out of the parking lot. The car was last seen heading up Yost Boulevard toward Braddock Hills.

The suspects are described as a white male, medium to heavy build, about 50 to 60 years old, and balding with glasses; and a white female, medium to heavy build, blondish hair, about 50 to 60 years old.

The manager said he reviewed the store surveillance footage of the couple inside the store. Police obtained vehicle owner information and found the car is registered to a Swissvale resident. Driver's license photos of both the owner and a female of the same last name matched the images of the couple inside the store.

Police obtained arrest warrants for both suspects.

Jan. 15

• A resident of Kenmore Avenue called police to report harassment by a man who keeps calling him. Because there were no messages left, police told the resident there was no sure proof of harassment. An officer tried the phone number but it went to voice mail.

Jan. 14

• Officers responded to a call from the Rite Aid store for a report of a disorderly woman. The assistant manager told police that a woman accused a cashier of not giving her the proper change. When the assistant manager checked the cash drawer, the money was correct. The woman continued to cause a disruption. Police located her at a Yost Boulevard bus stop. Officers advised her that she is not permitted in the store any longer.

• A resident of the 300 block of Sharon Drive reported to police that someone took about $40 in spare change and 27 oxycodone pills from his vehicle overnight. Police found no sign of forced entry.

• While on patrol at 3:39 a.m., an officer observed a white Ford Explorer parked on Lenox Avenue near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue. Two people were sitting in the front of the car and, as the officer approached, he smelled a strong odor of fresh marijuana coming from the vehicle. He also saw a toddler on the driver's lap. The driver told the officer that he had stopped to see his daughter and he was talking with his daughter's mother. The officer spotted a marijuana blunt in the lap of a woman in the passenger's seat. He had the driver hand the child to a teenage female in the rear seat, and made both the driver and front-seat passenger step out of the car. After running the man's name through the county dispatch, the officer learned he was wanted by the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office for a probation violation. Police issued non-traffic citations to the front-seat passenger and driver. The teenager and toddler were turned over to the teen's aunt. 

Jan. 13

• A Marion Avenue resident told police that the upstairs neighbor children are running around upstairs and causing a noise disturbance. She was advised it was a matter for the landlord to address.

Jan. 12

• A small brown-and-black terrier-type dog was found on Halsey Avenue. Officers placed the dog in a holding cell until arrangements could be made to pickup the dog.
