UPDATED: Car Flipped on Roof in Edgewood Accident, One Man Injured

One man was taken to the hospital.

A man was taken to UPMC Shadyside Presbyterian Hospital Thursday morning after a car flipped onto its roof near the intersection of Edgewood and Maple avenues around 9 a.m.

As other drivers turned onto the road, they quickly turned in the opposite direction as trucks lined Edgewood Avenue near Verde Art Space. Edgewood police also responded to the scene.

Police Chief Robert Payne said there was one man involved in and injured in the crash. He was conscious at the scene before he was taken to the hospital.

The driver of the car was traveling in the right hand lane of traffic moving toward the and the  when he allegedly tried to squeeze through the intersection with parking on the right and traffic traveling toward him in the opposite lane, Payne said.

“A witness saw the car lurch forward and strike the stone wall adjacent to the barber shop, which caused it to go in the air and flip onto its roof,” Payne said.

Payne said it looks as though the driver, who bought the brand new car this week, may have accidentally hit the gas rather than the brake.

His name was not yet available Thursday afternoon, Payne said.
