¡Hola y bienvenidos!

 A quick review and warm-up:

  Hoy es miércoles. Mañana es jueves. ¿Qué tiempo hace? Hace frío y no hace sol. (translation at the end of the post)

 Today we’ll finish our discussion of the verb gustar: to like.

 We’ve learned there are two forms of gustar: gusta and gustan. When talking about yourself, the verb is preceded by me. When talking to someone about their likes and dislikes, use te.

 To review, here’s how it works:

 1)      me/te gusta + infinitive

2)      me/te gusta + singular noun

3)      me/te gustan + plural noun

 Remember, to turn Te gusta_____ (you like_____) into a question, all you have to do is add question marks:

 Te gustan los deportes:       (You like sports)

¿Te gustan los deportes?    (Do you like sports?)

 So let’s expand our options for conversation by adding some question words and some new vocabulary to the forms of gustar.

 A good question that you can memorize is:

 ¿Qué te gusta hacer? (K tay goos-tah ah-sair): What do you like to do?

 Okay, that may seem somewhat random, but you can add to that with a time frame:

 ¿Qué te gusta hacer los sábados? (los sah-bah-dose): What do you like to do on Saturdays?

 Instead of “on Saturdays” you can say:

 los fines de semana (los fee-nays day say-mahn-ah): on weekends

 después del trabajo (days-pways del trah-bah-ho): after work

 en el verano (en el vair-ahn-no): in the summer

 Another question word you can use is cuándo (kwan-doe): when

 ¿Cuándo te gusta ir al gimnasio? (kwan-doe tay goos-tah ear all him-nas-ee-oh):

 When do you like to go to the gym?

You can also combine qué and cuando:

 ¿Qué te gusta hacer cuando tienes tiempo libre? (tee-en-ace tee-em-poh lee-bray):

 What do you like to do when you have free time?

 Now we’ll put it all together and you can practice by translating these questions and answers. There’s some vocab from old posts and some new vocabulary, so get out that old Spanish-English dictionary:

 1) ¿Qué te gusta hacer los fines de semana?

No me gusta limpiar la casa pero me gusta ir al cine.

 2) ¿Cuándo te gusta esquiar?

Me gusta esquiar cuando hace sol y no hace mucho frío.

 3) ¿ Te gusta viajar?

Sí, me gusta viajar cuando tengo tiempo libre.

 4) ¿Te gusta cocinar?

Sí, me gusta cocinar mucho pero no me gusta lavar los platos.

5) ¿Te gusta correr en el parque?

No, no me gusta correr, pero me gusta montar en bicicleta en el parque.

6) ¿Qué te gusta hacer los viernes después del trabajo?

Me gusta ir a un restaurante y pasar el rato con amigos.

7) ¿Te gustan los deportes?

Me gusta el hockey, pero no me gusta el beisbol para nada.

8) ¿Cuándo te gusta ir al parque?

Me gusta ir al parque cuando hace buen tiempo.

9) ¿Qué te gusta beber cuando hace mucho frío?

Cuando hace mucho frío me gusta beber el chocolate caliente.

10) ¿Qué te gusta comer cuando hace calor?

Cuando hace calor me gusta mucho comer helado.

Write some of your own questions and answers with gustar, looking up new words to build vocabulary. The more you practice, the better you’ll be able to speak Spanish when you have the chance.

Translation of the warm-up:

 Hoy es miércoles. Mañana es jueves. ¿Qué tiempo hace? Hace frío y no hace sol.

 Today is Wednesday. Tomorrow is Thursday. What’s the weather like? It’s cold and it’s not sunny (at least this was all true when I wrote the post).
