King O' Stats Ready for Another Roundball Season

Local statistician for many years (Sports)

While at the lottery machine at the Braddock Hills Giant Eagle retrieving yet another losing scratch-off ticket, I felt a finger press into my shoulder.

As I began to move aside feeling as though I was blocking the exit, I noticed that it wasn't an impatient customer who had tapped me, but rather a face familiar to many who follow local high school sports. That index finger belonged to Deuce Skurcenski.

If that name is not familiar to you, then I can readily say you have little or no interest in high school sports in this area. Deuce is to the high school sports scene as Bruno Sammartino is to local wrestling lore. However, Bruno has long-since retired while Deuce is on the mend and back full throttle. It was great to see him out and about, having been hospitalized earlier in the year. He seems to be rehabbing quite nicely. Deuce has been involved at the scorers' table, in the press box or on the sidelines for high school sports for decades.

He has witnessed about 10,000 hoop affairs and nearly a third as many gridiron contests in this area and beyond. Deuce, a 1961 grad of North Braddock Scott HS, is THE premier scorebook man in the country. His finished pages could pass as artwork, meticulous as they are. And, should you attend a WHHS basketball game, you will most definitely see him at the end of the table closest to the home squad.

As the phrase goes, "Everyone knows Deuce." And me being a new face at the table as the public address at the high school, I thought it best to keep a low profile, as I have done. So Deuce acknowledging me with that shoulder tap surely made it a day that was off to a good start, for sure.
