Organist John Scott to Perform at St. Paul Cathedral

The Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh will present renowned organist John Scott in concert at 4 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 16, at St. Paul Cathedral. The concert will be co-presented with Dr. Ross P. Cafaro, Jr.

Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, John Scott currently serves as organist and director of music at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City. His professional playing career spans 36 years, including a 26-year stay as organist and director of music at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Mr. Scott will begin the concert by performing works by Samuel Scheidt (1587–1654), Jean Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1512–1621), Dietrich Buxtehude (1637–1707), Ad Wammes (b. 1953), and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). Following an intermission, he will continue with music by Robert Schumann (1810–1856), Marcel Dupré (1886–1971), Peter Racine Fricker (1920–1990), and Simon Preston (b. 1938).

Showcasing Mr. Scott’s talents is the landmark Rudolf von Bekerath organ at St. Paul Cathedral. Originally built in 1962 and recently restored, the mighty instrument speaks through 5,010 pipes that provide the sound and architectural style of great European organs.
