Volunteer of the Week: Evelyn Christie

This local woman volunteers at a local food bank.

Evelyn Christie of has been volunteering at the St. James food pantry in Wilkinsburg since 2003.

“Someone asked me if I would give some help,” she said. “It was a Thursday and we were packing the bags and she asked me to come back Saturday. Then it never ended.”

The food pantry at the local parish serves 120 families every month on the third Saturday. Christie said she enjoys everything about being involved as a volunteer.

“The volunteers are great and the clients are great,” she said. “They are very appreciative.”

Christie is in charge of all of the food ordering. While she knows she is helping others, she said she doesn’t dwell on why it is rewarding for her on a personal level. She simply does what needs to be done.

“I know it’s a necessary thing and it’s too bad it is necessary,” she said. “I get them as much good food as I can do everything I can for them.”

Donations of both food and money are welcome at the church, which is located at 718 Franklin Ave.
