Train Collides with Tractor Trailer in East Pittsburgh

Crews responded to the scene at the tracks along Tri-Boro Expressway, no injuries reported.

A tractor trailer and Norfolk Southern train collided about 8:30 p.m. Thursday along a stretch of track across from the U.S. Steel Edgar Thomson Works near the intersection of Main Street and the Tri-Boro Expressway in East Pittsburgh.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the truck driver and a passenger were able to escape before the collision. A train traveling in the opposite direction struck the tractor-trailer, wedging the wreckage between the two trains, the Trib reported.

Emergency crews reported that more than 126 gallons of diesel fuel were leaking at the scene of the fiery crash. Local fire crews, Allegheny County Hazmat teams and the Salvation Army responded to the scene.

Emergency lights lit up the night sky as crews worked at the scene. The train cars could be seen along stopped on the track along Braddock Avenue in Braddock.

Tri-Boro Expressway was closed for a time but was reopened to traffic by 10 p.m.
