Plum Baby Born on Parkway East is ‘Doing Great’

Rush hour had a whole new meaning this morning for Plum residents, Dana and Dave Highland.

Dana Highland of Plum delivered a healthy baby boy this morning on the Parkway East with husband, Dave, assisting, according to Dana’s sister, Jaime Calabrese.

Dana’s water broke early this morning and after dropping off their other children, five-year-old David and 2-year-old Delaney, at their grandparents’ house in Penn Hills, Dana just “didn’t make it” to their intended destination, Calabrese said.

Dominic Gerald Highland was born in a Dodge Durango on the Wilkinsburg onramp this morning while Dave was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, according to Calabrese.

“After [Dana delivered Dominic], Dave took his shirt off and wrapped the baby in it,” she said. “He put the baby on Dana’s belly and tied the cord with his shoe lace.”

Dave drove Dominic, who is 7 pounds, 13 ounces and 21 inches long, and mom to UPMC Mercy Hospital where they are resting after all the excitement.

“Mom and baby are doing great,” Calabrese said.
