PennDOT Announces Squirrel Hill Tunnel Holiday Schedule

Squirrel Hill Tunnel rehabilitation work is suspended Saturday morning through Jan. 1; work resumes Jan. 2.

Work to rehabilitate the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) in the will continue through Saturday morning, Dec. 22.

After Saturday morning, no restrictions related to the rehabilitation project will occur in the tunnel through the upcoming holidays. The following schedule will occur:

Westbound single lane traffic:

  • 9 p.m. on Friday night, Dec. 21, through 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, Dec. 22.
  • After 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, no restrictions through Jan. 1.
  • Jan. 2, overnight westbound single lane traffic resumes, Monday through Friday nights.

Eastbound single lane traffic:

  • 11 p.m. on Friday night, Dec. 21, through 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, Dec. 22.
  • After 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, no restrictions through Jan. 1.
  • Jan. 2, overnight eastbound single lane traffic resumes, Monday through Friday nights.

No westbound full closures are scheduled at this time.

Routine tunnel maintenance may still necessitate some short-term, overnight restrictions.  

The a $49.5 million project to rehabilitate the Squirrel Hill Tunnel includes updating electrical, lighting, air control and ventilation systems, structural repairs to the walls and arched ceiling, tile repairs, installation of a water line and other improvements.

To minimize impacts on the traveling public, rehabilitation work on the bridge that carries the Parkway East over Commercial Street will be performed as part of the tunnel project. Expansion dam on ramps at the Edgewood Swissvale interchange will also be replaced.
