Patch Picks: Improve Your Curb Appeal This Weekend

Regent Square Civic Association and partnering organizations will teach you how to make your house feel great this Saturday! Also, time for a movie!

How’s your house feeling these days? A little snow-ravaged? Gutters gouged? Windows weary? Paint peeling? Not exactly bound for HGTV anytime soon?

If your humble abode is feeling a bit too humble, the fine folks at a quartet of local organizations — the Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association, , Neighbors Unite Wilkinsburg and the — are presenting a free workshop on beautifying your place. They’re calling it “Curb Appeal: Adding Value to Your Home and Community,” and it’s this Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at in Regent Square.

The two-hour workshop will be broken in half, kicking off with presentations from local home experts on topics like working with your home’s architectural style, choosing the right colors, what materials are needed for different houses, and the dreaded duel you’ll inevitably face with your lawn and landscape.

Thereafter, attendees will get a crack at one-on-one sessions with presenters, as well as free “mini-consultations” with architects and landscape architects from the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh. (It is, of course, recommended that you bring photos of your house if you plan to avail yourself of that opportunity, lest you be left trying to awkwardly describe your porch to someone.)

This is the fourth such workshop conducted by these groups, and while the previous sessions highlighted interior issues — renovating, green energy — and landscaping, this is the first workshop designed solely to making your home look its best. So get up early Saturday morning, grab some glamour shots of your house and figure out how to impress the neighbors!

After the Workshop - Catch a Movie!

While you may leave the Curb Appeal workshop and run straight for paint rollers and hedge trimmers, you may also want to relax for a few hours of your Saturday afternoon. How about a movie? Regent Square Theater has Sofia Coppola’s latest, "Somewhere," starting this Friday.

The film stars Stephen Dorf as a somewhat washed out Hollywood actor plodding around his California home; his solitude is shaken by the unexpected appearance of his 11-year-old daughter. Coppola’s fourth feature won the prestigious Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

It plays all week, but if you’re looking to complete your day after Saturday morning’s workshop, you’ll be looking for the 3:15 show — grab a couple hot dogs at D’s in between!
