Patch All-Star Kid: Maggie Mayer

Maggie Mayer is this week's Patch All-Star Kid!

University of Pittsburgh Falk Laboratory School’s Maggie Mayer is in the running to win up to $5,000 dollars with her video “Polio: Past, Present, and Future.”

Accomplishment: Mayer’s video, which she wrote and edited herself, is a runner in Take a Shot at Changing the World, a video competition where students in middle school and high school write and produce videos connecting the development of the polio vaccine to the current efforts to eradicate the disease in countries where it remains a problem. The contest was created to raise money to administer the polio vaccine to people around the world who are still suffering.

All-Star Kid’s Key to Awesomeness: Mayer was a natural filmmaker, her mother said, ever since she got her hands on a camera. This isn’t the first time one of her films has been so successful. Her video, “Edgewood, Pennsylvania: Summer in My Town” has had more than 4,000 views and won her $100. With it, she purchased a new camera to film her latest hit.

Mayer says it was a long editing process, matching up each scene with the narration she provided, but an experience well worth it. Despite how this competition goes, I think it’s safe to say that Mayer won’t stop making films any time soon. We hope not!

We want to hear about your amazing children and teens as we select one each week as the Patch All-Star Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to beauchamp.sarah1@gmail.com
