Mayors for Meals Day Celebrated in Wilkinsburg

Local ministry partners with leaders to deliver Meals on Wheels Wednesday.

Wilkinsburg Community Ministry Wednesday celebrated Mayors For Meals Day as a part of its March For Meals campaign.

Wilkinsburg Mayor John Thompson participated in the event to show his support for the community’s homebound and hungry seniors.

Mayors For Meals Day involved volunteers and youth from the Forbes Road School, who beautifully decorated the bags that are used for the meals. Ministry staff also met with the mayor before delivery at the coffee shop for light refreshments at the Life Care Hospital, where the ministry's meals are prepared each day.

“We are excited about having Mayor John Thompson participate in our Mayors for Meals Day event. We hope to raise awareness and recruit more volunteers to join us in the national movement to end senior hunger by 2020,” said Executive Director Ann Greider in a news release. “Mayor Thompson also delivered meals for us last year and we are glad that he is able to perform this task again this year.”

March For Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, initiated by the Meals On Wheels Association of America, which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community.

“We thank these local leaders for stepping up to the plate and joining our mission to end senior hunger in America by the year 2020,” said MOWAA President and CEO Enid Borden, according to the release. “Meals On Wheels programs are on the front lines of our battle and need support from elected leaders to continue providing the nutritious meals and human contact that our seniors so desperately depend on.”

Senior nutrition programs across the United States, like Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. Mayors For Meals Day is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local mayors and other local elected officials.

The MOWAA is the oldest and largest national organization in the United States representing those programs that provide meals to people in need. MOWAA’s mission is to end senior hunger by 2020.
