Heaven's Scent Pastries Returns to Forest Hills

Family owned business is reopening its doors this Friday.

Bernadette Ogurchak’s freshly baked scones are on their way back to Forest Hills.

The co-owner and baker at Heaven’s Scent Pastries on Ardmore Boulevard decided to reopen the shop with her daughter, Alissa Miller,

The shop returns to Ardmore Boulevard this Friday morning with the shelves stocked full of cookies, cupcakes, scones and other baked goods.

The mother-daughter team closed the bakery Dec. 31. Ogurchak completed some special orders for customers, but she could not bake on a large scale because of complications from a heart surgery last August. Now, she said she is fully recovered and ready to get back to baking.

Ogurchak did try to find a buyer for the shop, but with no luck, she said she is excited to open her own business once again.

“I couldn’t find it in my heart to rip the bakery apart and sell it piece by piece,” Ogurchak said. “So my daughter and I decided to reopen.”

Ogurchak does not bring in any goods from outside companies; she and her daughter bake everything from scratch. And with Easter just a few weeks away, Ogurchak is prepared for a large volume of orders from specialty cakes to Easter bread and nut rolls.

She said one of her most popular items were the scones, fresh from the oven every morning. During the weekends, people would come in for the sticky buns special. And, of course, customers enjoyed ordering a cake in whatever shape they wanted or specially decorated for a holiday or celebration.

“I heard from a lot of people during my absence,” Ogurchak said. “They even called me at home to order cakes -- I don’t think it will take long to get our customers back.”

And for other businesses along Ardmore Boulevard, the bakery reopening means more customers on the block and more money for everyone.

, said he noticed less people walking by after the bakery closed.

“People used to come in with their little white bag from the bakery and get a coffee or something,” he said. “It will be nice to see that again.”

Since Ardmore is a busy, four-lane road, getting drivers on their way to or from work to stop and walk around will attract new customers to the handful of businesses. And bringing back the smell of fresh scones and cookies right out of the oven could lull drivers to a stop.

“The neighboring businesses said they missed us,” Ogurchak said. “They are glad we are reopening.”
