Saturday Light Brigade Celebrates 35 Years Saturday

Larry Berger was just a 16-year-old from Churchill when he first broadcast his long-running weekend radio show, "The Saturday Light Brigade" on WYEP-FM in 1978.

He was soon joined by his classmate, the late Bill Lucker of Wilkins Township, who served as his sidekick and producer until 2003.

The two friends from the former Churchill Area High School, now Woodland Hills High School, continued the broadcast through college and after entering the workforce, faithfully getting up each Saturday morning to volunteer their time for a show that was a labor of love.

Berger's wife, Rikki, has been an important part of the operation, too, for a number of years.

The show from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 16, will celebrate "Saturday Light Brigade's" 35 years on the air. The show now broadcasts live on WRCT on the Carnegie Mellon University campus and five other regional radio stations. 

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh City Council presented a proclamation recognizing March 16 as “Saturday Light Brigade Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
