Oakland Girls Choir Offers December Concerts Nearby

The choir, led by Kathryn Barnard of Forest Hills, will perform at Phipps Conservatory and in concert at Church of the Ascension.

Oakland Girls Choir of the Pittsburgh School for the Choral Arts has planned a musical journey from darkness to light for its concert on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, Ellsworth Avenue at North Neville Street in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood.

Eighty girls from grades one through 12 from throughout the area will be performing. is from Forest Hills.

At its center, Transeamus (Latin for "crossing") features Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, performed by the 35-voice Concentio. Written in the 1940s, Britten’s piece is based on English texts from the 15th and 16th centuries, composed for treble voices and harp.

The program will also include the Pittsburgh premiere of Frank La Rocca’s Magnificat, performed by the 14-voice Chamber Choir. In addition, Melodia and Harmonia choirs will be singing carols from around the world. Framing the concert will be carols arranged by David Wilcox, John Rutter, and others.

At the Phipps Conservatory on Friday, Dec. 7, during one of the featured candlelight evenings of the Winter Flower Show, Oakland Girls Choir of will present pieces from Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, as well as traditional carols arranged by David Wilcox and John Rutter, performed by the 35-voice Concentio.

Offering a new take on traditional caroling at the door, alumnae of Oakland Girls Choir are available to sing by request on Saturday, Dec. 22 between 4 and 9 p.m. The ensemble of trained singers will perform favorite Christmas carols. The group is available for a few songs on a doorstep, or a little longer serenade indoors. Carolgrams range in price from $100 to $150.
