As the backyard chicken movement grows, so does the interest in coops, breeds and eggs.
The public will have a chance to get a closer look on Sunday, Sept. 8 when the third annual Sewick's Chicks tour returns to the Sewickley Valley.
The event runs from from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features a dozen sites on the tour.
Coops are located in Sewickley, Sewickley Heights and Edgeworth, where owners will be available to answer questions and talk about their birds.
Much like backyard chicken keeping, the annual tour has increased in popularity.
In June, Forest Hills Council approved an ordinance permitting residents to keep bees and chickens with appropriate rules and restrictions. The approval came after months of discussion with residents for and against the new law.
Organizers of Sewick's Chicks estimated about 20 people attended the first year. Last year, about 80 adults and children attended. It's a safe bet there will be even more flocking to attend this year.
