Whitefish Bay, Wis. Reader Wins Patch's Prediction Contest

Three readers came within one point of predicting the final score on Sunday.

Patch ran a over the weekend for Sunday's big game, asking readers to predict the answers of four questions:

  •        What will the final score be?
  •        Which player will score the first touchdown?
  •        What will be the first-half point total (Steelers and Packers scores combined)
  •        What will be the main color of Fergie's halftime outfit (as determined by Patch judges)?

Carol Runge in Oak Creek, Wis.; Sadie Nerswirk of Waukesha, Wis.; and Gordon Lang in Whitefish Bay, Wis., each predicted a final score of Packers 31, Steelers 24. (The actual final was 31-25 Packers). Thus, all three were entered into a drawing for Patch's first- and second-place gift cards.

Based on a random drawing, Lang won the $100 first-place prize, and Nerswirk won $50 for second place. Runge will receive a consolation prize for her nearly perfect prediction.

Another 10 Patch readers came within just two points of the correct score. The three finalists were among more than 100 readers in the Milwaukee and Pittsburgh areas to enter the contest.

Here are the results for the other three questions:

First Touchdown

Dozens of readers correctly predicted that the Packers would score the first touchdown, but only three Patch readers correctly predicted that wide receiver Jordy Nelson would be the one to do it. Nelson opened the game's scoring with a 29-yard TD reception in the first quarter.

Nerswirk, Sheryl Cerniglia of Oak Creek and reader "falcons fan" in Greenfield, Wis., each guessed that the Packers' third-year wide receiver would score the game's first six points. All three were entered into a random drawing, and Cerniglia won a Patch-themed prize.

Halftime Total

Eight Patch readers correctly predicted that the Packers and Steelers would combine for 31 total points. It was 21-10 Packers at halftime.

Nerswirk; Jake Leonard of Waukesha; "Nick" in Greenfield; Robert Crytzer in Caledonia, Wis.; reader "jjh" in Menomonee Falls, Wis.; "Paul B" in Oak Creek; and Clare Lynch and Lori Gehr, both of , all had the correct halftime total. Lynch's name was pulled in a random drawing for a Patch-themed prize.

Fergie's Dress

A whopping 41 readers correctly predicted the color of Fergie's dress. The judges accepted black or silver as correct answers. Christine DeMao, a reader of the Dormont-Brookline Patch, won a random drawing for a Patch-themed prize.

Contest notes

Gehr also came within five points of the final score. She credited her husband for coming up with her 31-20 entry.

Nerswirk, if you didn't notice, turned in an impressive ballot. She correctly answered three of the four questions and came within one point of predicting the final score. Yes, we did make sure that her entry was submitted before kickoff!

Milwaukee- and Pittsburgh-area readers were confident in their teams. Only a handful of Patches saw their readers go against the home team in their final-score predictions.
