PennDOT Defends Weekend Tunnel Closings

Some small businesses are losing sales.

PennDOT officials are defending weekend Squirrel Hill Tunnel closures after a small business owner is complaining about a big loss in sales.

Spokesperson Steve Cowan told the Post-Gazette that crews removed 100 feet of concrete slab and then poured new concrete that needs a weekend to cure.

He also said when crews do work on the ceiling you can't have traffic going through the tunnel.

Nina Wolf, one of the owners of Animal Nature in Regent Square, told the newspaper the store sees a 50 to 60 percent loss in weekly sales when the tunnel closes for the weekend because of the bad traffic jams that occur along the detour.

Jamie Wallace, owner of Alma Pan-Latin Kitchen at South Braddock and Forbes avenues, said he sees a 25 to 30 percent dip in revenue when the tunnel is closed.

The next closure is scheduled for the weekend of July 26.
