Patch Picks: Top-Notch Thai in Edgewood

Edgewood's Curry Away is a perfect Thai restaurant in an unassuming spot.

Edgewood is full of surprises, I’ve found, and they’re usually something bordering on delightful. One of the best is hidden in the tiny shopping plaza on Edgewood Avenue, facing the train tracks. Most of what’s here is typical—a convenience store, a laundromat, an absolutely sensational Thai restaurant.

Wait, what?

Curry Away is the unexpected gem in this unassuming strip of retail, slinging delicious dishes out of a tiny storefront. I knew it would be good, as it satisfies the first rule of all good Thai places (have a funny name), but I didn’t reckon that the small shop across the tracks from Edgewood Town Center would turn out to be one of the best Thai places in town.

Hearty portions of curry with fresh vegetables and just the right amount of spice. Big, filling entrees, all perfectly prepared. The most perfect, savory Crab Rangoon I’ve ever had. This place is truly fantastic.

Even more impressively, it’s affordable. Apps and soups top out at $6.95, and entrees range from $9.95 to $14.95, with most on the lower end of that modest range. Be sure to save room for some of the Sticky Rice desserts, too—a tasty treat, and a must for those unfamiliar with this brand of after-dinner fare.

Curry Away is open seven days a week for takeout, free delivery, and dining in—and while it is a particularly satisfying experience to open the door to excellent Thai food, you’ve gotta try the surprisingly peaceful storefront at least once. In a space no bigger than your dining room, you’ll find a soothing, tranquil little restaurant, with a view of the trains rolling by.

And if you’re coming out to Curry Away this Saturday, why not take in an art opening beforehand? , just down Edgewood Avenue a few blocks, is having its from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The mixed media show will feature the work of eight artists, and is a great introduction to a new landmark on Edgewood’s arts landscape.
