'Chicago Steppin'' Offers Neighborhood Fun

This local group knows how to dance.

Chicago Steppin’ is an evolution of dance from the ‘20s currently being explored during group sessions at the Wilkins School Community Center in Regent Square.

Karen Gist of Penn Hills said she got started a few years ago and has been hooked ever since.

“It started out with swing and bop and has grown into a type of ballroom dance,” Gist said. “It’s called Chicago stepping because it started out there, and over time, people in other places picked it up and made it their own.”

“I like the fact that its a great social outlet,” Gist said. “You get a chance to meet a lot of people.”

In addition, Gist said she travels to many different cities to enjoy the form of dance.

“You enjoy each other and share a common joy of dancing,” she said.
The current group is growing with a core number of about 15 people. One instructor is from Chicago.
