A representative of the neighborhood also will attend the closed meeting. The Sherwood Event Center, located at the end of Sherwood Road, is technically located in Wilkinsburg Borough. However, there only is one way to get there, and that's on Sherwood Road in Forest Hills. Many neighborhood residents have flooded council chambers in recent months to discuss problems with traffic, speeding, …

Forest Hills Council Takes Next Step to Allow Urban Farming

Forest Hills officials are expected to move forward with allowing residents to raise chickens and bees.

Forest Hills residents interested in raising bees and chickens might be able to do so in the next few months—but they want people in the community to be educated about urban farming. Next Wednesday, borough council is expected to approve the advertisement of an ordinance regulating the raising of bees and chickens. Once the proposed law is publicly advertised, officials will be ready to approve or reject it in June. Council had discussed separating the bee and chicken ordinances, but during a straw vote, the majority agreed to keep them together. Councilman Mike Belmonte said he hoped to hold off on the matter in an attempt to educate the community about urban farming. Officials agreed to continue with the process to pass the law and to …

State Has Money for Edgewood Primary School, Forest Hills Police and You

The Pennsylvania Treasury's Bureau of Unclaimed Property lists local organizations and businesses with money due them—and there might be some out there for you, too.

Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, certificates of deposit, life insurance policies, safe deposit box contents and recovered stolen property.  Most of this unclaimed property is owed to individual residents. (Read below to find out how to search for yourself or for a relative). However, there are a number of municipalities, school districts, fire and police departments, civic groups, and other organizations that also have money waiting for them. The state website identifies the property as either "under $100" or "over $100" and the source of the property. A quick (and by no means complete) search of the state's …

Discussion About Urban Farming in Forest Hills is Far From Over

Forest Hills Council will continue to discuss the possibility of allowing people to raise chickens and bees at the committee level.

Forest Hills residents remain divided about whether or not people should be allowed to raise chickens and bees in the borough. At Wednesday's council meeting, many residents in the packed council chambers continued to discuss the pros and cons about changing the current borough ordinance that prohibits urban farming. Officials also stressed that the discussions are ongoing and will continue. Those in favor of changing the ordinance highlighted a resident's freedom of choice to live greener lifestyles, and to eat fresh, organic food. Those opposing it submitted petitions and raised concerns about safety, health, enforcement and property values. Resident Anna Chorazi, a former pediatrician, said she remembered when the borough did allow …

I see no reason to not allow chickens, but also think the ordinance should provide penalties for those who are irresponsible. That said, to build a coop is a large undertaking that irresponsible folks would avoid. In the spirit of compromise, I think it's important to have rules to revoke coop permits from households w/ (for example) repeated salmonella outbreaks, or who fail to wash their eggs …   more ›
