Woodland Hills Defeats Fox Chapel, 38-0

The Wolverines easily handled their conference rival, putting up 31 points in the first half.

The Woodland Hills Wolverines returned to the Wolverena Friday night looking to better their 2-1 conference record. They did so easily, beating the Fox Chapel Foxes 38-0.

The Wolverines are well aware that every conference game from here on out is extremely important, especially in light of a loss to Central Catholic two weeks ago.

“Every conference game is a big game,” said Head Coach George Novak.

The game started out slower than some may have anticipated, but the Wolverines made sure they would be the first to put points on the board. Woodland Hills struck when sophomore Ronald Ford broke free and ran 15 yards for a touchdown. The Wolverines didn't waste any time after getting the ball back; senior quarterback Patrick Menifee hooked up with senior Mike Caprara for a seven-yard touchdown through the air.

The Wolverines started the second quarter off with a bang when Ford returned a punt deep into Fox Chapel territory. This set up another Wolverine touchdown when senior Jamiere Dutrieuille scored from 10 yards out. The Foxes fumbled the following kickoff, allowing the Wolverines to yet again take advantage of a great opportunity. Junior Alex Beasley scored a quick touchdown on a one-yard run.

On the following kickoff, Coach Novak chose to gamble. The Wolverines surprised the Foxes with a pooch kick and were able to recover the ball. Senior Sam Scifo was then able to tack on three more points and Woodland Hills took a 31-0 lead into halftime.

The second half saw much less offense from both teams. The Wolverines pounded the ball, rushing on almost every play, while the Foxes were unable to put anything together. The Wolverines would score for the final time on a 59-yard run by Dutrieuille. The Wolverine defense kept the Foxes in check for the rest of the game, allowing Woodland Hills to emerge with an important conference win.

A win in a conference game is very important, but a win like this is even better for the team.

“It’s nice when everything gels together and it helps us build our confidence back up,” said Dutrieuille.
