Western Pa. School for the Deaf Hosts Community Block Party

Music, games and more will be offered to the whole neighborhood.

is hosting its fifth annual Community Block Party Oct. 1, complete with a yard sale, food and a children’s talent show.

The event stemmed from the gatherings, which are held for local leaders from Swissvale, Wilkinsburg and Edgewood each month to encourage communication across municipal boundaries.

“The idea was to knock down the borders between the varying communities here and getting neighbors to talk to neighbors—the way block parties do,” said Vicki Cherney, director of marketing and communications at WPSD. “We are all right here.”

Local businesses and nonprofits are welcome to set up tables to spread awareness. Table space for businesses and nonprofits is free. Spaces at the yard sale are $10 for those who want to sell different items.

D.J. Ray will play oldies through the afternoon while WPSD catering will serve hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks. A Sno-Cone truck will be at the block party as well, while Ben and Jerry’s will have an ice cream cart. Everything is low cost with some items free, Cherney said.

Local radio station 3WS will be handing out Halloween candy, while other kids activities include a train ride, face paint, a magician and games.

“It’s just a great day of neighbors talking to neighbors,” Cherney said. “It’s a neighborhood event.”
