Local Author Releases Humor Book
Mike Buzzelli is publishing 64 humor columns and short stories about his life and upbringing in Scott Township.
A local author isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers in his recently released book that contains numerous humor columns and short stories he’s penned over the past few years.
A stint as a stand-up comedian in Los Angeles also gave him a different perspective of other people from around the country.
“I think living in Scott gave me a unique perspective,” Buzzelli said. “I knew lots of funny people in Chartiers Valley and around the area. I think we have that strong work ethic here. I certainly stay busy with writing columns and holding down a job. I think that’s a Pittsburgh attitude.”
In his new book, Below Average Genius, which can be purchased on Amazon.com, Buzzelli writes about his childhood memories of the area and even some of his flops as a stand-up comedian. He also explains how his lack of photography skills baffled tourists who just wanted their picture taken at Disney Land.
“It’s a lot of self-deprecation,” he said.
But there’s also a lot of local flavor in the book, which has 64 of his columns from recent years.
One column about Morelli’s Mom & Pop on Lindsay Road, which appeared on Chartiers Valley Patch in July 2011, rekindled childhood memories and riled up some readers.
“They’re still commenting on (that story),” Buzzelli said. “(The columns) are mostly observational. Most of them are making fun of myself, and yes I do make fun of other people. But I make fun of myself more.”
Buzzelli hopes his Scott Township roots show through in the book and brings back memories for people from western Pennsylvania. He also thinks it will bring some laughs to readers who don’t take themselves too seriously.
“There’s a lot in this place that is ripe with humor,” Buzzelli said. “Living in Pittsburgh is a unique experience. It’s something else.”
Below Average Genius retails for $8.95 on Amazon.com.
