Hearings Held on East Hills DUI Task Force Checkpoint Arrests

District Judge Thomas Caulfield heard five DUI cases in his Forest Hills courtroom last week.

District Judge Thomas Caulfield handled several cases in his Forest Hills courtroom on Sept. 19, including these:

  • Michael A. Formato, 32, of Ross Township waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving safely, fourth offense and subsequent offenses), driving under the influence-high rate of alcohol (blood alcohol content .10 to .16, fourth offense or subsequent offenses), driving the wrong way and careless driving. According to a criminal complaint, Forest Hills police filed the charges after observing Formato driving the wrong way in the 1500 block of Ardmore Boulevard on Aug. 11. An officer detected the odor of alcohol on Formato, who failed field sobriety tests. A breath analyzer test showed him to have a .149 percent reading, the complaint said. The legal limit is .08.
  • Zachary J. Godula, 27, of Irwin waived his right to a preliminary hearing on a charge of driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving safely, first offense). Forest Hills police filed the charges after detecting alcohol on Godula's breath during an East Hills DUI Task Force sobriety checkpoint on July 21 in the 2000 block of Ardmore Boulevard. Godula failed field sobriety tests, according to a criminal complaint.
  • Darryl G. Robinson, 27, of Wilkinsburg waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving safely, first offense) and restrictions on alcoholic beverages (open alcoholic beverage). Forest Hills police filed the charges after Robinson failed field sobriety tests and the presence of alcohol was detected during a preliminary breath test during the East Hills DUI Task Force checkpoint on July 21, according to a criminal complaint.
  • Jeffrey Nelson, 35, of Forest Hills waived his right to a preliminary hearing on a charge of driving under the influence—highest rate of alcohol (blood alcohol content .16+, first offense). Forest Hills police filed the charges after an officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on Nelson and he failed field sobriety tests at an East Hills DUI Task Force checkpoint on July 21 in the 2000 block of Ardmore Boulevard. According to a criminal complaint, his blood alcohol content was .266 percent.
  • Jason Rhine, 29, of New Kensington waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of driving under the influence—high rate of alcohol (blood alcohol content of .10 to .16, first offense), criminal mischief, reckless driving and driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving safely, first offense). Forest Hills police filed the charges after Rhine was involved in an accident in the 3700 block of Greensburg Pike. An officer detected the odor of alcohol on Rhine and he failed field sobriety tests, according to a criminal complaint. His breath analyzer test results were .146 and .155 percent. The legal limit is .08.
