District Judge Hoots Hears DUI and Other Cases
The results from the Sept. 13 hearings in her Wilkinsburg courtroom.
Magisterial District Judge Kim Hoots heard several cases involving driving under the influence in her Wilkinsburg courtroom on Sept. 13.
- Devonta Lamonte Manker, 19, of Troy Hill was held for court on several charges, including rape. For more details, click here to see the Sept. 16 story on Patch.
- David Fry, 34, of Wendel, PA, was held for court on several charges, including robbery, in connection with a hold-up at the Edgewood Express on March 26. For more details, click here to see the Sept. 16 story on Patch.
- Allen Lamont White, 41, of 658 Princeton Blvd., Wilkinsburg, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of disorderly conduct, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, driving under the influence (controlled substance combined alcohol/drugs, first offense), driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked and exceeding the 25 mph residential district by 20 mph. While conducting a speed trap, a Wilkinsburg police officer followed White and pulled him over. According to the criminal complaint, the officer smelled the odor of alcohol and marijuana. White failed field sobriety tests, the complaint stated. The charges were filed by Wilkinsburg police.
- Thomas Edward Kraynak, 23, of 5837 Darlington Ave., Apt. 5, Squirrel Hill, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving safely, first offense), driving under the influence (highest rate of alcohol, blood alcohol .16+, first offense) and failure to yield at yield sign. While on patrol June 23, a Wilkinsburg offers heard a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, according to a criminal complaint. The officer said Kraynak failed to yield at the intersection of Park Avenue approaching Montier Street. When the officer stopped the car on Hill Avenue, he detected the odor of alcohol on Kraynak. After failing field sobriety tests, he was arrested. His blood alcohol content test showed a level of .218 percent.
- Shawn D. Wisniewski, 33, of 7477 Delmar Way, Swissvale, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving, first offense), driving under the influence (highest rate of alcohol, blood alcohol content .16+, first offense) and improper stop. Edgewood police filed the charges July 1 after finding Wisniewski asleep in the driver's seat beside a building in Edgewood Towne Centre and not being able to wake him. According to the criminal complaint, police detected the odor of alcohol on Wisniewski and he failed field sobriety tests. His breath analyzer test registered .171. The legal limit is .008.
- Leah Bayla, 38, of 2334 Buena Vista St., Swissvale, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on charges of simple assault, simple assault-mutual consent fight, resisting arrest, driving under the influence (general impairment/incapable of driving, first offense), driving under the influence (highest rate of alcohol, blood alcohol content .16+, first offense) and careless driving. The charges were filed by Edgewood police after Bayla was involved in a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Aug. 31. Her breath analyzer test showed levels of .214 and .204. The legal limit is .08.
- Airik Walker, 21, of 5545 Black St., East Liberty, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of loitering and prowling at nighttime, tamper with/fabricate physical evidence and prohibited acts—intentional possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered. According to a criminal complaint filed by Wilkinsburg police, an officer saw a man identified as Walker standing next to a pay phone inside the Exxon gas station at 1100 Penn Ave. in Wilkinsburg on Sept. 5. Police said in the complaint that Walker appeared intoxicated and they found crack cocaine in his possession.
