CONNECT Holds 3rd Annual Meeting This Friday

Local organization works to bring boroughs together.

The Congress of Neighboring Communities is holding its third annual meeting this Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Twentieth Century Club in Oakland.

Attendees will include the membership of CONNECT—local elected and appointed municipal officials from Pittsburgh and the 35 municipalities that share its border—and representatives from local government and civic organizations.

“CONNECT has made great strides over the last year in continuing to bring these 36 local governments together to address common issues,” said CONNECT Vice Chair in a news release. “We are looking forward to meeting as a full congress to review our progress and accomplishments, and to pass resolutions that will guide our work for the next year.”

The congress will provide a forum for discussion on issues and opportunities facing CONNECT member municipalities in areas including water and sewer, emergency medical services, blighted and abandoned property and public transit.

CONNECT representatives will pass resolutions based around these and other topic areas and will elect officers to lead the organization. CONNECT is currently led by Chair Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Vice Chair Schaefer, Second Chair Dan Demarco of Ross Township, and Secretary Treasurer Marcia Taylor of Mt. Lebanon.

A highlight at this year’s congress will be the unveiling of recommendations for alternative models of managing and financing improvements to the multi-jurisdictional sewer lines located in 18 CONNECT communities that have a direct flow connection with Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority.  This study was funded by 3 Rivers Wet Weather and a full report will be available at the Congress.
