Joe Davis is opening the neighborhood’s newest coffee shop within the next two weeks—just in time for smoothie season.

Biddle’s Escape, an eclectic hang-out spot located off the beaten path of Regent Square’s business district on the street it is named for, will be packed with creative minds, fair-trade coffee, international beads and artifacts.

The chalkboard outside states, “REALLY soon,” for those anticipating the new neighborhood spot’s opening day.

Davis, who previously owned a coffee shop on Craig Street in Oakland, said he is looking forward to finally being open after a slew of permits through Wilkinsburg borough slowed the process.

He expects the final occupancy permit—which already is approved—to be in his hand within days. Shortly after, he’ll open the doors at the corner of Trenton and Biddle avenues.

“I am excited to see who comes in,” Davis said. “It’s all about word of mouth.”

Biddle’s Escape has an open-air feel as a large garage door opens a whole side of the space to the outdoor patio. A scarlet and black carpet covers the outside of the coffee bar, while solid walls of red and bright yellow are painted in the room.

Another wall features exposed brick, while the back area of the shop will hold beads from around the world. Davis said the bead aspect of the business will grow after the coffee side is established.

Davis also said he is in the process of hiring a barista for the shop. Smoothies, Italian soda, two different coffees and a decaf will be offered daily.

Commonplace Roasters is taking care of roasting the beans for Biddle’s Escape.

“We are bringing in all fair-trade beans from Nicaragua and Costa Rica—the cash will go directly to the farmer,” Davis said.

He said the shop’s first patrons can look forward to an enjoyable atmosphere.

“There’s not another coffee shop like this,” he said.

Biddle's Escape is located at 401 Biddle Ave.

Exciting! I'd be interested to know what the hours will be. Also, I have a knitting group that will meet here regularly if you put in some couches/comfy chairs, Joe!!

This place looks excellent! Regent Square has been in need of a coffee shop that is comfortable to spend some time in and this looks like just the place. Being off the beaten path, it does seem like the success of this business will depend on word-of-mouth and I'll be sure to start to spread it. I can't wait to visit.

Who knows, this might also cause some other business to spring up on Trenton that is more conducive to drawing people into that part of the neighborhood. That'd be nothing but a good thing.

Word of mouth spreads fast in our community, so I'm sure he will benefit from this.

I love Costa Rican coffee. It's a little out of the way for me but I'll have to stop by.

Joe is looking for some neighbors to help him move some stuff out of the shop's basement! If you want to help, call him at 412-999-2068.

I've been dying to have a local alternative to my current nearby coffee shop (which shall not be named). Looking forward to stalking you until you open!

I shouldn't be surprised how fantastic the place looks, but WOW! I am so envious of all of you. 25 years ago, Joe invited me on the Magical Mystery Tour that's been his world all along. Welcome to it.
